The Opalaca Coffee Region, in the Western Highlands of Honduras, is named for the Opalaca Mountain Range, and known for its fertile soil. Opalaca Coffee is produced in the heart of the Department of Intibuca, on small family farms. Intibuca is home to Honduras’ indigenous people, the Lencas, also known as “the jaguar people”.

The Coffees

Our Honduran specialty coffee is “Strictly High Grown”, at altitudes of higher than 4,000 feet in the Opalaca Mountains of Western Honduras. Single-sourced from small coffee farms, its notes are known for great complexity of flavors: tropical fruits, grapes and berries; a fine delicate acidity; and a balanced aftertaste.

How we make a difference

The Children’s Center, Inc. (TCCI) programs are located along the Texas Gulf Coast, from the Louisiana border to the Mexican border. We encounter and serve runaway and homeless youth from across the world, with significant numbers from Honduras, fleeing poverty and violence. In seeking better ways to serve youth trapped in these extraordinary circumstances, we met two Honduran youths who were former clients of TCCI.  One suggested work in coffee as a viable alternative, the other invited us to visit his coffee farm in the mountains of Intibuca, Honduras. Thus, the idea for Coffee Artisan Friendship Exchange (CAFÉ) was born, to benefit local coffee producers and homeless and runaway youth needing services in Texas and Honduras.

THE FARMS - Our People

Jose Adonay lives on a small coffee farm in the village of La Sorto, in the Department of Intibuca. He coordinates Opalaca Coffee production activities for CAFÉ on “micro lots” within the community. This includes the day-to-day activities of cultivating his own trees with great care and work with friends such as Gilberto, Milton, Hector and others, on their farms, to produce CAFÉ’s exceptional coffee.
